Representation matters

Media Done Responsibly believes that Black Lives Matter. By developing an award-winning media literacy and digital citizenship training program that centers diverse youth voices and connects them with industry leaders to support their professional pathways; by curating digital safe spaces for our communities to come together with impunity to share openly and authentically, while being heard in an atmosphere of non-judgment, empathy and love; and by developing the Media Done Responsibly Awards™ to amplify artists, technologists, content creators and media agencies that incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion into their principles, policies, practices and platforms; we seek to disrupt the oppressive meta-narratives told about Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and offer a culture of Counterstories that CENTER THE VOICES of the traditionally disenfranchised.

Media done REsponsibly Virtual Film Festival

Picture
Media Done Responsibly's Virtual Film Festival accepts entries that center the lived experiences of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQIA+, disabled, immigrant, women, nonbinary/non gender conforming, intersectional or other traditionally marginalized communities. The main protagonist must fall within at least one of these categories. Submissions must reflect the complex humanity of these diverse groups and stay away from stereotypes. All genres are accepted including drama, comedy, romance, adventure, horror, science fiction, Afro Futurism, social justice, investigative journalism, and more.

The Festival's goal is to disrupt the *single story that feeds institutional racism. It grants agency to people to tell their own stories and in so doing, to reflect their fully-embodied humanity. The MDR Film Festival amplifies counterstories that center the humanity of BIPOC and traditionally marginalized communities. It centers stories of people with intersecting oppressions and shines light on their joy, their complexities, their cultures, their customs, and their contributions to our society and world.

Digital Safe Spaces and Living Room Conversations

The world witnessed the brutal murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in May of 2020. Outrage reached a tipping point that led to massive global marches calling for justice in a rallying cry that proclaimed emphatically that  "Black Lives Matter!" Another tipping point was hit for Black people who have seen this state violence repeatedly, for years, carried out with impunity. Black people suffered rage, exhaustion, deep grief and sorrow and needed space to simply be and experience these feelings in communion with other Black people without having to explain to anyone why it was needed.

Media Done Responsibly created two Digital Safe Space events in response to this need. One was "Black Women Answer the Call: A Dialogue and Strategic Action for Black Women." The other was "Unmasking: A Dialogue and Strategic Action for Black Men." We hosted these events as Living Room Conversations and created Conversation Guides in collaboration with our partners at LivingRoomConversations.org.

Listen to MDR CEO Shaunelle Curry talk with the hosts Angela Richardson, Amiri Mahnzili, and Jason Mitchell as they share their experience with activists and artists Erika Sorondo and Sean Hill. Then take action by using the Conversation Guides linked below to host your own Conversation on this topic.
